How to Make a Character

Post by Admin on Thu May 12, 2016 9:10 pm

So, let me tell you about you. Let me tell you about the things you'll be doing, and some of the stuff you'll experience, so you can learn more about you, better.

In this game, you'll be playing a person, for a definition of person, who currently lives in Augur Bay. You will become a member of the ABCC. You have always, just recently, or will shortly start seeing weird stuff. Auras. Colors. Doors that lead to nowhere. Shadow people. Portals. Feel weird emotions, vibes, when you enter a room or see someone. Have prophetic dreams. Feel power around certain objects. Feel cold all the time. These things depend on you and WHAT you are.

You are Aware. The Aware are... aware of the spirit world. They can see things, feel things, sense things, even when they don't want to. They are drawn to places which emit good feelings, attractive vibes. The Augur Bay Community Center is one of these places.

How you became, or are becoming aware is up to you. Normal people, people without your feelings and abilities, seem protected from the weird and mysterious otherworld by a gossamer bubble. Its silken caress protects them and blinds them to the energies around. The easiest way to see the world beyond this bubble is for it to pop. When this happens, the world as it truly is is revealed.. But it's harsh, and leaves you cold. The bubble, known as Soul or Spirit, can only be 'popped' through a handful of events. It makes you 'dead inside'.

Trauma can break the vessel which contains your soul, emotional, physical, or otherwise. Maybe you were born without a soul. Maybe someone stole your soul, or an item or person you loved so much you shared your spirit. Maybe your sold your soul, or maybe it was tricked away from you. Maybe you committed such crimes to your person, or wasted your soul away by doing evil deeds. Maybe you simply lost it. As it is now, you are incomplete.

The 'dead inside' exhibit signs of depression. They feel listless, cold, overwhelmed with ennui. The world lacks color, flavor, or sensation. Sadly, drugs and therapy don't have the same power is has for others. But you, you are lucky. Here in Augur Bay, and here, right here in the Community Center, things feel better. Like they were. Augur Bay is a nice place, and living with your situation seems bearable.

The shape of your vessel, the method at which it broke, the skills you have, everything else is up to you.

So, now that you know what you are, let me tell you about what you're going to do.

This game is an investigation game. You will be seeking your truth, protecting your city, making friends, and exploring not one but two worlds. Sessions will involve investigating one person's lead. Maybe you will help a friend look for their missing friend at a shady club. Maybe you will travel to far away lands to fetch and item for an important ritual. Maybe you will ask your buddies to join you to find the cause of the nocturnal screaming by your house. You're goals will move the story along, and the world is there to investigate and discover. You will also work at uncovering a bigger story, at the speed you personally take interest.

Now, having some sort of investigating skill, like finding clues, talking to strangers, all of that might be helpful. However, anything can be a way to investigate leads. Do you paint? Maybe the local gallery will have something worth knowing. Do you love to party? Well, maybe you'll meet a guy who knows a guy. Maybe your bird watching skills can apply to stalking that suspicious guy who might actually be a Big Foot. There's always the bulletin board. The world is yours for the taking.

In between sessions, you'll have the opportunity and hopefully the pleasure, of roleplaying threads with the GM and other players. Get a drink or a coffee to discuss the city, use your downtime between missions to train your hand to hand fighting with a pal, start a business with your frenemeny for great fun and profit. Any questions about the world can be answered by the GM, but locations, some NPCs, personal homes and property can all be genned by players. You're encouraged to create, though check with anything that you want. We're going to build the city together.

So, you have a concept. There's a picture of a sentient person in your head. Now you want to gen your character sheet.

We're running this game in the Dead Inside setting, but its system, PDQ, is a little hard for novices to learn, and lacks some of the buildability and flexibility of other systems. We're gonna make our characters in the Unknown Armies system. It's fairly simple, it's elegant, and a great gateway game into other RP systems.

First thing, open up this here type-on-able character sheet.

Secondly, here's a nice simple set of instructions. You will be starting as an Average Person with 220 points. Free skills are your basic skills you get just for making a character. If you don't want to be an average person and want to be special in some way, let me know and we'll work it out.

Character sheets, when finished, should be emailed to me. PM me if you don't have my email.

Once you've signed up to a forum, you'll get your own private forum. If you and another player wish to share a private space, such as a house, where you don't want other players to read your threads, a private shared forum can be allowed upon request.

Dead Inside are lacking the soul energy to cast magic, especially in the real world. If you wish to take a magic skill, discuss it with me.

There are helpful links in the above. If you can't see them, consider picking a name (you can change it later if need be) and registering for the forum.
